Location information: Mercogliano is an Italian town of 11 567 inhabitants in the province of Avellino in Campania.
The municipality is located to the west of Avellino, with which it is contiguous in urban planning thanks to the extension of the populous hamlet of Torrette. Together with Atripalda, Aiello del Sabato, Monteforte Irpino and the city of Avellino itself, it constitutes the Urban System of Avellino (STSD2) as outlined by the Regional Territorial Plan.
Fractions
Montevergine: The hamlet of Montevergine is composed of the homonymous Catholic sanctuary, located on the mountain of the same name and connected to the capital by funicular.
Torrette: The populous hamlet is located on the state road 7 Via Appia, contiguous with the outskirts of Avellino. Developed urbanistically in the last 30 years of the twentieth century, it is home to numerous activities and commercial centers, as well as industrial ones, which make up most of the town. Considered as the municipal economic center and one of the largest in the entire province, it is composed of the district of Torelli to the north.
Torelli represents the historic core of the lower part of the city. The centre has developed since the late sixties, thanks to the presence of the Avellino Ovest exit of the A16 motorway (Naples - Canosa).
Acqua delle Noci, a hamlet downstream of the historic center of Capocastello, is composed of a nucleus of houses, completely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1980.
Castle Leader
In Mercogliano there are the abbey of Loreto and the sanctuary of Montevergine, the latter destination of numerous pilgrimages from all over Italy, especially in the summer. Thanks to a funicular it is possible to reach the sanctuary from Mercogliano in just seven minutes.
The historic center of Mercogliano is well preserved and typically medieval, where narrow streets and alleys alternate between tenement houses and the homes of ancient lords.
